2084
a novel of the future upon us

Should contact sport go to blood sport? “2084” shows what we hold dearest in a future arriving with labor pains. A tale revenge fluffs out with more flourish than a spray net pompadour!

“2084” beckons a manageable tomorrow, where sporting skill and natural superiority will render America strong.

Let freedom ring!

Break it down: Sport carries America on bedrock action. The 12th man gets frothing mad on game day to vent the other self, screaming bloody murder.

What would we be without sport? In trouble is what. Sport is lust. We may still need war. Show me oil fields up for grabs, I’ll show you a double elimination bracket.

2084 is sporting overlay on needs and challenges, like gridlock and the more, more, more we hold dear. Depression, confusion and anxiety on the rise. So?

2084 is satire, send-up, sci-fi sans sci, stuck in present mud. Never before have so few killed peace of mind for so many.

2084 is not 1984. The new hero does not resist control but eases in. Billy Moline, has been, washed up, dreams of might o’ been. Media mind control and Republican mandates rule. Deficits soar over the dispossessed. Fuck it; numbers. Traffic jams, all altitudes. Killing nature makes things safe, opens shit up.

In 2084 the High Republican solves too little money, too many people. It’s a win-win paying huge to winners, making losers patriotic, boosting society in general on enhanced sporting acuities.

1984 became the most banned book of all time. 2084 is better.

NOTE: In 1961, Mrs. Albin assigned a story to an 8th grade class in southern Indiana. I wrote of sporting glory, 13′ nets, 8′ players, crushed glass and razor wire on goal posts. One guy drank a gallon of hot tea before each game. Ball in his mouth, he launch it with accuracy on steam power. Hey, age twelve. We’ve come a long way, maybe. I never set out to be timely. Many books want to be topical. Introducing his World War I vintage novel, Victory, Joseph Conrad apologized for the German villain; topical should be anathema to classic literature. I disagree a bit. Here are, convergent in the moment and future upon us.
